Background information

This organ is a good example of a typical large English parish church instrument. The whole organ was sampled with the exception of some of the stops on the Choir organ as there are runnings on the chest and the division is also extremely quiet. The Hauptwerk specification above represents some of the best ranks from this instrument. It is in need of attention - do visit the church music website by clicking on the link above to find out more. A contribution from each sample set will go directly towards the upkeep of this instrument. The rest of the organ sounds very fine. Some of the reeds are on quite high pressure with nice harmonics. There are tierce mixtures and some of the quieter stops are particularly beautiful.

For Hauptwerk 3, the sample set will contain a totally new looking organ console along the lines of the 'English Romantic' tradition - the existing console is not really notable (there are in fact two consoles for this instrument!). There will be several different 'scaled' sample sets available to suit the requirements of different users. The organ is pretty much original Hill pipework. There was originally a massive Binns organ in this building prior to WW2 when the building was bombed. It was evidently Binns' magnum opus. This organ was installed secondhand by Compton in the 1960's pretty much original except with the provision of a new console. The organ sounds fantastic in the building which has a big acoustic of around 3 seconds - this acoustic has been included in the sample set; the samples are fairly 'wet' without being sampled too far away from the instrument or too close to be unrealistic. The aim was to capture the sound of the instrument in a position where it could be both played and listened to.
